Father and son. Family-owned.

Locally run, with decades of hands-on experience in food retail. We built Kai Co to keep food honest, affordable, and free from unnecessary costs — because feeding people well should be fair.

About Kai Co

Kai Co was built on a simple belief: food is essential, so it should be priced fairly.

We’re a locally owned, family-run business with over 20 years of experience in food retail here in Canterbury. After years of running a successful high-volume, low-margin store, we saw firsthand how much of the cost of food comes from layers that don’t add value for customers. Kai Co is our answer to that.

We keep things simple, buy smart, and operate lean — so we can pass real savings on to you without cutting corners on quality.

What we do

We sell fresh meat, produce, and everyday groceries at prices that are always fair and always honest.

Our butchery focuses on quality cuts prepared fresh in-store. Our produce is sourced from trusted growers, locally whenever possible. Our grocery range sticks to the staples Kiwis actually buy — no unnecessary clutter, no inflated pricing to cover big overheads.

You’ll also find popular value options like meat boxes, produce boxes, and simple multi-buy deals that make feeding the family easier and more affordable.

Why we’re different

We’re independent. That means:

  • No distant head offices setting prices
  • No greedy shareholders pushing margins
  • No unnecessary costs added just because “that’s how supermarkets do it”

We’re big enough to have strong buying power, but small enough to stay flexible, hands-on, and connected to our customers and suppliers. We believe in being good to the people we buy from, because that’s how good value gets passed on.

Our promise

Good food, priced fair.

Not as a slogan — as a standard we hold ourselves to every day.

If we can lower a price, we will.

If something isn’t good enough, we won’t sell it.

And if there’s a smarter way to do things, we’ll take it.

Kai Co exists to make food shopping simpler, fairer, and less stressful — for families, for households, and for our community.
